Writers Zoya Hasan and Alexandra York examine why purpose-built secure infrastructure matters -- and how Valarian is addressing this need.
The Security Wake-Up Call
Senior government officials, including US Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently received some backlash for conducting national security discussions on Signal -- a consumer messaging app. This isn't isolated. Officials routinely use Signal and WhatsApp for convenience, creating vulnerabilities for adversaries to exploit.
Why Valarian Exists
Organisations in high-stakes environments need tools designed for their requirements, not consumer applications with security patches.
Valarian's ACRA platform delivers through two products:
Privileged Communications isolates sensitive collaboration completely. Every conversation, file transfer, and video call operates within controlled, auditable compartments. When discretion isn't optional, standard tools fail.
External Communications Capture monitors and archives external platforms without disrupting workflows. This provides complete visibility over WhatsApp, Signal, and similar channels with auditability by design.
Both operate on compartmentalisation principles. Data remains isolated, controlled, and auditable from entry to exit.
Digital Sovereignty Imperative
Valarian CEO Max Buchan told Forbes: "There's a massive opportunity here to bring capabilities back into the hands of Europeans."
This isn't compliance theatre. When government communications depend on foreign infrastructure, national security becomes vulnerable to external pressure.
We work with US government agencies today. Our vision extends further. European governments deserve the same security and control, built by companies that understand European requirements.
Recent Investments
Our $7 million round, co-led by Artis Ventures and Scout Ventures, brings total funding to $20 million. Artis Ventures backed Palantir early, while Scout Ventures brings enterprise security expertise.
These investors understand: secure communication infrastructure is critical national infrastructure. It deserves the same investment as physical defence systems.
Infrastructure, Not Theatre
Max explained to Forbes: "When you start building stuff that has an effect on western democratic freedoms, it's an element of 'This stuff we're doing is really important, not just for us as a business, but actually for the belief systems we all have.'"
We don't build security theatre. We create infrastructure that enables democratic institutions to operate securely in hostile digital environments.
